We’ve had some informal meetings with the York Special Ed director in the beginning of the year to give her an idea of what Dakota needs and how involved he really is. This made today’s meeting go very smoothly. Right off the bat she had put it out there about our informal meetings and that we just needed to make the formal decision. So that was easy right. Then we went on to discuss nursing. Right now Dakota has a nurse with him for 8 ½ hours on school days. She helps him get ready for his day and then is transported with him to The Morrison Center. At school she helps as much as the classroom teachers need her to. She does his medicine and feeds. Right now because of the increase in seizure activity she stays in the classroom or wherever Dakota goes. The teachers are becoming more aware of his seizure types and what his look like. (not all seizures look alike) Without his nurse they may not always pick up on a very small seizure. I really thought it would be a fight to continue his nursing need at school. Everyone agreed that he still needs her especially now between his seizures and health lately. So the nurse is still on his IEP until we meet again in October when we will reassess his needs. We talked about ESY(extended school year) this program is to help maintain what the kiddos have learned throughout the year but not help progress. Typically they try to decrease the amount in days because of this. Thankfully Dakota’s therapist and teachers all agree that in order to maintain what he is learning he should continue the 4 days. We talked about getting him a communication evaluation and that will take place sometime this summer if not the beginning of the school year. It will be interesting to see if the proloquo2go or the eye gaze system will benefit him.
Thankfully I’m not afraid to ask any question even if it’s not the most important thing. Like I’ve said before we’ve had our heart set on Dakota going to York for kindergarten unfortunately its just not the right fit for him right now. I really want him to be able to experience everything that you do in school. I want him to be able to go on filed trips and attend all the special activities that the school has. I figured if I don’t ask I’ll never know the answer. So that’s what I did, I asked if he’d be able to take part in them. Of course they brought up that as long as there was transportation available and an aid/nurse to go with him it would be fine. I stepped in and said that I would take him if need be. This will be great in many ways. The kids will get to know Dakota and when it comes time for him to go to York schools he will have some buddies. He’s already got some great ones so I’m not to worried about that.
All in all it was great meeting. Dakota has such a great team, we all work together and figure out what’s best for him not us. Not once did I feel they looked at the lease expensive route, they make sure that his needs are met, that he’s happy and thriving.
